Occupational Therapist Allison Olejarnik is proud of organizing and leading the Roscoe Conkling Wellness Day Committee for the past four years, and this year’s event continued its mission of promoting wellness in a truly holistic way by supporting students’ physical, emotional, creative, social and even financial well-being. “As one of the school’s occupational therapists, I am passionate about leading a healthy, active lifestyle both for my own long-term well-being and so I can best support the students and families I work with. Wellness Day reflects that same mission: helping our school community build habits that support resilience, connection, creativity and lifelong health. It is truly an honor to help bring this event to life each year and to watch our students engage, explore and celebrate what wellness means for them,” says Olejarnik.
This year’s event included a variety of interactive stations run by both community organizations and dedicated school staff at Conkling. Students enjoyed exercise contests, a coloring and creativity table, as well as opportunities to build with large blocks. A healthy snack and infused water table, featured flavored waters and veggie straws to fuel the day. Face and hand painting, brought out creativity and smiles among the youngest students. One of highlights was a visit from a therapy dog, a friendly golden retriever who stopped into classrooms, lighting up the students day!
The community partnerships continue to grow each year for Wellness Day. The UCSD is grateful to welcome representatives from ICAN, Mohawk Valley Wellness, The Utica Children’s Museum, First Source Federal Credit Union, Utica Gas and Electric, The Utica Public Library, The Utica Youth Bureau and Cornell Cooperative Extension Child Care Council. Each organization added its own unique contribution to promote areas of wellness such as financial literacy, community engagement, safety and healthy habits.
