District News: September 11th Letter from Dr. Christopher M. Spence

Dear Utica City School District Community,

I write to you today with a heavy heart, but also with hope and determination. The recent tragedy in Georgia has deeply touched all of us, stirring feelings of sadness, fear, and concern. These events resonate across communities, often leaving us with more questions than answers. Please know that we share these feelings, and your concerns are completely valid.

As your Superintendent, I want to reassure you that the safety and well-being of our students and staff remain our highest priority. Every day, we are committed to ensuring that our schools are safe spaces for learning and growth.

However, creating and maintaining a safe environment is something we must approach together, as a community. I encourage each of you to remain vigilant and supportive of one another. If you see or hear anything that raises concern, please do not hesitate to reach out to us. Your observations are invaluable, and we are always here to listen and respond. Let’s remember: if you see something, say something.

Amid these heavy moments, it was heartening to see the excitement and energy in our schools last week as students returned to the hallways. Their enthusiasm serves as a reminder of the vibrant community we have all built together.

As we move forward, this week also marks a time of reflection, as we approach the 23rd anniversary of the September 11th attacks. Though many of our students may be too young to remember that day, it is important that we honor those lost and continue to share the lessons of unity, resilience, and hope with them. I encourage you to have thoughtful conversations with your children as we reflect on this day together.

In moments like these, our strength comes from the care and unity we show one another. Let’s continue working together to ensure our schools are places where every child feels safe, supported, and inspired to learn.

Thank you for your continued trust and support of the Utica City School District.
